“We have the power to shape a new democratic era” – Offei-Addo

Ghanaians must rise and take control of their nation’s political future. That is the firm message from finance and media expert Benjamin Offei-Addo, who insists the power to strengthen democracy begins with the people, not just the politicians.

Speaking at the International Political Communication Conference at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC-IJ) in South Legon, Offei-Addo concluded his address with a direct appeal. The event, organized by the Center for Public Discourse Analysis, on Friday, March 7, 2025, centered on the theme A New Democratic Era: Enhancing Civil Political Discourse for Democratic Growth.

“The general public needs to learn to demand accountability. We must support non-partisan media and know the issues that matter,” he told the audience. His key point followed: “Upon this, the future of political communication in Ghana is in our hands. We have the power to shape a new democratic era, one defined by development, national cohesion, and lasting prosperity.”

Offei-Addo, a staunch supporter of good governance, made it clear his message was not only for those in power. “We must be ready to change. Demand accountability from those at the top, yet, we must hold ourselves to the same standard,” he said.

Quoting American Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., he added, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. Let us bend the arc of political communication in Ghana towards justice, development, and a brighter future for all.”

In a country where many outlets lean heavily toward major political parties, Offei-Addo sees independent journalism as a way to cut through the noise.

"We must support non-partisan media and familiarize ourselves with the issues. Supporting non-partisan media is crucial in today's polarized world. With this, we can ensure that we are getting unbiased information, which is essential for making informed decisions. It is up to us to demand better from our media and from ourselves." The media expert said.
